California Resources Corporation (CRC) achieved the first CO₂ injection at Carbon TerraVault I (CTV I) in Kern County, marking California’s first operational carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. The milestone establishes a new market for industrial carbon storage and supports the state’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality.
CTV I uses depleted oil and gas reservoirs at Elk Hills Field to permanently store captured CO₂ more than one mile underground. The project can store up to 1.46 million metric tons of CO₂ annually, equivalent to removing nearly 350,000 cars from the road, demonstrating a scalable and cost-effective climate solution.
The CRC-Brookfield joint venture plans to expand Carbon TerraVault with eight additional storage reservoirs, adding potential capacity of 352 million metric tons of CO₂. The project is expected to create jobs, support local communities, and establish California as a leader in large-scale carbon management infrastructure.
