Serbia is taking a major leap toward sustainable waste management. The French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have pledged €300 million in loans to build seven regional waste management centers, benefiting 47 municipalities across the country.
The initiative tackles the long-standing issue of unsanitary landfills by introducing sanitary landfill systems, mechanical-biological treatment (MBT) plants, and facilities for biogas, leachate treatment, recycling, and composting.
The move is expected to modernize Serbia’s waste infrastructure, cut pollution, and promote a circular economy in line with EU environmental goals.
Serbia is turning trash into opportunity — building greener systems, cleaner communities, and a more sustainable future.
