Major Investor Exits Nestlé Over Climate Strategy Concerns

The investor is Railpen, one of the largest corporate pension funds in the United Kingdom. Railpen began to suspect that the company was not fully disclosing information about the actual methane emissions from dairy farms.

Nestlé is the world’s largest milk processor, and dairy ingredients are the primary source of its emissions. According to a study by the Changing Markets Foundation, methane emissions from the company’s livestock supply chains are estimated at about 8.7 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e). The same study found that this is nearly twice the emissions of Switzerland’s entire livestock sector.

Despite this, Nestlé left the Dairy Methane Action Alliance in 2025. Railpen believes this move significantly affected investor confidence in the company. As a result, the fund says it is no longer certain about the reliability of Nestlé’s climate strategy or its commitment to reducing emissions throughout its supply chain.
