Microsoft has announced an investment in Fortera, a California-based startup specializing in low-carbon cement, aiming to tackle the significant carbon footprint of data center construction.
Fortera’s innovative “ReCarb” technology captures waste CO₂ to produce cement with up to 70% lower emissions than traditional methods. The company plans to scale operations with a new 400,000-ton-per-year facility, supported by Microsoft’s Climate Innovation Fund.
This move aligns with Microsoft’s broader sustainability strategy, including prior investments in low-carbon materials like green steel and cross-laminated timber, as the company targets carbon-negative operations by 2030.
By integrating Fortera’s cement into data center construction, Microsoft seeks to significantly reduce embodied carbon, contributing to global efforts in decarbonizing the construction industry. The collaboration highlights the role of innovative materials and corporate investment in accelerating green technology adoption.
