Five Finalists Announced for Venice Sustainable Cities Challenge

The Toyota Mobility Foundation has revealed the five finalists of the Venice Sustainable Cities Challenge, a global competition aimed at promoting low- and zero-carbon transport in urban areas. Each selected team will receive $130,000 to pilot their solutions in Venice as part of a broader initiative to advance sustainable mobility.

Chosen from over 120 international submissions, the finalists impressed a panel of experts with their innovative, scalable, and human-centered approaches. Their proposals include digital platforms that encourage active travel, reward systems for eco-friendly commuting choices, and tools to integrate various transport modes into seamless, user-friendly services.

The Challenge, part of a $9 million global initiative in partnership with Challenge Works and the World Resources Institute, supports cities in developing cleaner and more inclusive mobility systems. Alongside Venice, the cities of Detroit and Varanasi are also hosting local competitions.

Over the coming months, the finalist teams will test their ideas in Venice, aiming to shift everyday travel behaviors and contribute to a more livable, climate-resilient urban environment. The most impactful projects will receive further funding in 2026 to expand their implementation.
