In response, a new initiative called BerlinPay aims to turn visitors into active contributors by rewarding them for small but meaningful actions like picking up trash, supporting community projects, or improving public spaces.
The concept is simple—good deeds earn perks. Tourists who participate can receive vouchers for free or discounted entry to attractions, meals at local restaurants, and curated city experiences. Rather than penalizing negative behavior, BerlinPay follows a growing trend of incentivizing positive actions, similar to programs in other cities that encourage more sustainable and mindful tourism.
Set to launch this summer, BerlinPay will focus on water tourism, encouraging visitors to help clean and care for the city’s waterways. With millions already being spent annually on waste management, the initiative invites tourists to become part of the solution. Beyond the immediate rewards, the broader goal is to foster a stronger connection between visitors and the city, promoting a more responsible and engaged travel culture.
