Too Hot to Talk About Heat: London Conference Canceled

The incident took place in London due to the lack of air conditioning at the event venue.

Organizers decided not to bring participants together in 37°C (99°F) heat to discuss how cities can adapt to rising temperatures under such extreme conditions. The event was scheduled to take at the Shaw Library of the London School of Economics as part of Climate Action Week.

Meanwhile, Europe is experiencing the most intense heatwave on record, with temperatures reaching as high as 45°C (113°F) in some countries.

Against this backdrop, France closed kindergartens and schools and banned alcohol sales, Spain recorded 212 deaths in just four days—more than 40 of them from drowning—and in Germany, road maintenance crews were deployed to spray water on highways. Without such measures, parts of the road network could begin to deform as the bitumen, the primary binding component of the asphalt, softens in the extreme heat.
