Siemens & Vulcan Energy Scale Europe’s Sustainable Lithium

Siemens and Vulcan Energy have partnered to advance Europe’s first fully integrated lithium and renewable energy project, signing a framework agreement for the Lionheart project in Germany’s Upper Rhine Valley. The companies also signed a Memorandum of Understanding that makes Siemens the preferred supplier of automation and digitalization technologies for Vulcan Energy through 2035, with plans to extend this collaboration to future development phases.

The Lionheart project aims to produce 24,000 tons of lithium hydroxide monohydrate annually—enough to supply around 500,000 electric vehicle batteries each year. In addition to lithium production, the project will generate approximately 275 GWh of renewable electricity and 560 GWh of heat annually for local consumers, supporting a sustainable energy ecosystem over an expected 30-year lifespan.

Through this partnership, Siemens will provide advanced automation and digitalization solutions that will serve as the backbone of the project’s operations. Siemens Financial Services will also contribute strategic investment, reinforcing a long-term commitment to building Europe’s first major sustainable lithium supply chain.
