On March 18, Global Recycling Day, let’s reflect on recycling’s importance in conserving resources, reducing pollution, and creating a sustainable future. It plays a vital role in preserving resources and protecting the environment. Globally, consumer societies generate over 500 kg of waste per person annually. Without recycling, the damage to the environment would be severe, with toxic substances from landfills contaminating soil and water.
Serbia provides a strong example of how waste management and bioenergy contribute to sustainability. Despite its potential, the country recycles only 200,000 tons of waste annually—far less than it could process. With abundant agricultural and organic waste, Serbia could significantly increase its recycling and bioenergy production. The 44 biogas plants in operation, developed over 13 years, generate renewable energy for around 300 households, providing both heating and electricity. This demonstrates how waste recycling and bioenergy drive environmental protection and energy sustainability.
