New Train Routes Reconnect Cities of Former Yugoslavia After Decades

Starting 20 June 2025, a new international weekend train service will reconnect Zagreb, Ljubljana, and Pula by rail for the first time in over 30 years. The joint initiative by HŽ Passenger Transport and Slovenian Railways marks a major step in reviving cross-border mobility in countries of the former Yugoslavia. The route, long dormant since the early 1990s, aims to boost sustainable travel and regional cooperation. The train offers 171 seats, Wi-Fi, space for bicycles and prams, and accessibility features for passengers with limited mobility.

Separately, a direct line between Sarajevo and the Croatian port of Ploče will resume on 1 July, operating on weekends for the first time in over eight years. The route will feature modern Talgo coaches, offering passengers a comfortable cross-border experience. These developments signal renewed investment in sustainable rail travel and efforts to reconnect communities across the region.
