Lisbon Launches Citywide Reusable Cup Scheme

Lisbon has become the first European capital to roll out a citywide reusable cup system aimed at cutting single-use waste from nightlife and street events.

Every night, around 25,000 disposable cups are tossed in the trash across the city’s bars and public spaces. To tackle the problem, authorities have introduced a standardized reusable cup available for a €0.60 deposit. After finishing a drink, users can return the cup to a vending-style machine and get their money back instantly—via card or mobile.

The first two return machines are already in operation, with 17 planned across central Lisbon by October. Participating bars and cafés will all adopt the same official “Lisbon cup,” making it easy for customers to use and return cups across venues.

The initiative marks a major step toward reducing urban plastic waste and promoting circular economy solutions in everyday city life.
