According to the August 2025 China EV Sales Report, China’s electric vehicle market passed 1 million plug-in registrations in August 2025, up 8% year-on-year. Battery electrics surged 17% to nearly 700,000 units, while plug-in hybrids slipped 7%. Exports doubled, with more than 200,000 EVs shipped abroad, underscoring China’s rising influence in global markets.
Industry leader BYD saw sales plunge 21% compared to last August, its second month of steep decline. Meanwhile, rivals surged: Geely grew 84% and Leapmotor 83%, with Geely’s Xingyuan topping the sales chart at over 46,000 units. Tesla’s Model Y and Wuling’s HongGuang Mini EV also remained among the best-sellers.
Analysts note a clear consumer pivot away from plug-in hybrids and toward fully electric models. Once unshakable, BYD’s dominance is now under pressure from competitors across segments. With exports booming and domestic tastes shifting, 2025 may still become a record year for EV adoption, but with fiercer competition ahead.
