Balkan Battery Day to Spotlight Rapid Growth of Energy Storage Across Southeast Europe

Battery energy storage systems are rapidly moving from early-stage ambition to commercial reality across the Balkans, with gigawatt-scale project pipelines now emerging in Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and neighbouring markets. Against this backdrop, senior developers, utilities, investors, policymakers and technology providers will gather in Athens on 21 May for Balkan Battery Day 2026, a focused industry event examining how the region’s BESS market is accelerating and where the next opportunities are emerging.

The conference arrives at a pivotal moment for Southeast Europe’s energy transition. Across the region, battery storage is increasingly viewed as essential infrastructure for integrating renewable energy, stabilising electricity grids and supporting coal-phase-out strategies.

Balkans Battery Day

Greece has become one of the most advanced battery storage markets in Southeast Europe following recent government-backed auction rounds and wider electricity market reforms. A growing pipeline of standalone and co-located BESS projects is now being developed alongside large-scale solar and wind portfolios. Companies active in the market, including Rezolv Energy, MORE, Faria Renewables, HELLENiQ Renewables, Rokas Renewables, Principia Energy and Econergy, are progressing utility-scale renewable and storage developments aimed at strengthening system flexibility and unlocking new revenue streams.

Romania is also rapidly emerging as a key regional storage market, supported by EU-backed funding mechanisms, modernisation programmes and increasing investor appetite. Developers and utilities are accelerating battery deployment strategies linked to renewable integration and grid balancing requirements. Electrica, ENEVO Group and other market participants are among those helping shape the next phase of the country’s energy storage landscape.

Meanwhile, Bulgaria continues to attract attention as developers explore hybrid renewable-plus-storage models linked to expanding solar capacity and regional interconnection opportunities. Across the wider Balkans and WB6 markets, battery storage is increasingly being viewed as critical infrastructure for improving grid resilience, managing intermittency and supporting long-term energy security.

At the same time, questions around bankability, permitting, optimisation and market access remain central to the success of the sector. Balkan Battery Day will bring together many of the companies and institutions directly involved in addressing these challenges.

Confirmed speakers include Alastair Hammond, CEO of Rezolv Energy, Cristian Pîrvulescu, Co-founder and CEO of ENEVO Group, Gabriel Nenov, Head of Energy Storage Systems at Solarpro Holding, George Chronaios, Head of Investments and Market Intelligence at Principia Energy, Henri Taskinen, CEO of Capalo AI, Andreas Ntomaris from the Hellenic Energy Exchange (HEnEx), Tasos Mantzaras, Head of Energy Management and BESS Projects at Rokas Renewables, alongside senior representatives from Tetra Tech, Econergy Group, Baringa, Decade Energy, the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and others.

The programme will focus on the practical realities behind the region’s rapidly expanding storage ambitions, including grid connection bottlenecks, permitting frameworks, ancillary services, hybrid renewable projects and the commercial optimisation of storage assets. Dedicated sessions will also explore how battery storage can support regional energy security, cross-border electricity flows and wider system integration across Southeast Europe.

The event is organised by Invest In Network and supported by leading industry sponsors. Huawei Digital Power joins as Gold Sponsor, while LONGi and Capalo AI participate as Bronze Sponsors. Other sponsors include Clyde & Co, YESS Power and ENEVO Group.

Unlike large-scale exhibition events, Balkan Battery Day is designed as a highly targeted networking and business development platform, with pre-arranged B2B meetings running alongside the conference programme. Senior representatives from developers, utilities, investors, banks, exchanges, EPCs and technology providers will be attending

With Southeast Europe’s storage sector entering a decisive phase of development, the event is expected to provide one of the clearest snapshots yet of where the Balkan BESS market is heading next. Places are limited. For registration and full agenda visit: https://balkanbatteryday.com/
