Einride has achieved a global milestone by completing the world’s first cross-border operation of a cabless, electric, fully autonomous vehicle without a human driver onboard. The historic crossing took place at the Ørje border between Sweden and Norway as part of the EU co-funded MODI project. Supported by the Norwegian Customs (Tolletaten), the initiative highlights the potential of automation in future logistics operations. Einride’s system was integrated with Norway’s digital customs solution, Digitoll, through partner Q-Free, enabling digital goods declaration before entry.
The crossing combined several of Einride’s innovations, including its proprietary Autonomous Drive Stack, purpose-built cabless vehicle, and a remote Control Tower. Conducted on behalf of PostNord with support from partners such as Statens Vegvesen, Sintef, Trafikverket, and Østfold kommune, the achievement marks a significant step toward connected, cooperative, and automated mobility (CCAM). According to Einride and PostNord, the milestone demonstrates how autonomous technologies can boost safety, efficiency, and sustainability, signaling a new era for the logistics industry.
